Does an electric boiler need a water tank? – Trianco Blog

The summer months are a great time to think about your boiler, whether it’s boiler maintenance or an entirely new boiler. Don’t wait until the winter months to start thinking about what you need as you could get caught out in the cold! A new boiler is more energy-efficient, quieter and more reliable. So, you’re smart, you’ve got ahead and you’re ready to decide about upgrading your boiler to electric. But you’re stuck trying to answer, ‘does an electric boiler need a water tank?’.

If your boiler is a combi – NO

A combination or ‘combi’ boiler is a type of boiler that provides both hot water and central heating in a single compact unit. Combi boilers heat water directly from the mains when you turn on a tap, so you don’t need a hot water storage cylinder.

A combi boiler is a great solution for homes with limited space as the elimination of separate water storage offers a fantastic space saving solution.

At Trianco we have two different combi boilers – The Maxi and The Mini , both suitable for smaller properties or apartments. As per the names, the only difference between these boilers is size and consequently water capacity. The Mini is suitable for properties with a shower, whereas the Maxi for properties with a bath.

If your boiler is not a combi – YES

A regular or ‘conventional’ boiler is a type of boiler that heats water stored in a separate storage cylinder instead of supplying hot water on demand.  They are often more suitable for busier homes where the water demand is higher.

In the Trianco range, The Classic, Classic Plus and Mini System boilers all require an additional hot water storage solution.  Hot Water Cylinders can be purchased separately from most merchants.

The Mini System boiler is a neater solution as the boiler contains the expansion vessel and pump. This would be installed outside the boiler if using the traditional heat only Classic boilers.  Although a system boiler uses less space than a conventional boiler, they do require more space than a combi. This is due to an additional hot water storage solution is being required.

Hot Water Cylinder alternatives

If you want to purchase a conventional boiler but don’t think you’ve got the room for a hot water cylinder, there is a space-saving solution.

The innovative technology by Sunamp means that you can replace your water cylinder with a compact Thermino ePV or Thermino i Thermal Battery. Both are up to 4 x smaller than the standard water cylinder.

The Sunamp Thermino is up to four times more efficient than a hot water cylinder and keeps costs down by instantaneously heating the hot water required.  It can also be used as a highly efficient stand-alone water heater to ensure instant, mains pressure hot water for all household taps and showers.
